How school breaks work in the United States

There is no national school calendar in the United States. Start dates, end dates and every break in between are set locally — usually by an individual school district, and in a few states by a county system — so two schools a few miles apart can take spring break in different weeks. That is why this site publishes typical windows rather than one set of nationwide dates.

Most districts run a school year of roughly 180 instructional days between August or early September and late May or June, built around four recurring breaks: a fall break in late September or October where it is offered, Thanksgiving week in November, a winter break spanning the Christmas and New Year holidays, and a spring break of about a week in March or April. Summer break then runs roughly 8 to 12 weeks. Districts also close for most federal holidays, though which ones vary, and many add local teacher workdays and conference days.
