When is Winter Break 2026–27?
Winter break spans late December 2026 and early January 2027. The examples below start December 21 or 24 and end January 1, 5 or 6. A January staff workday can extend a student’s time away beyond the named recess, so confirm the first day of classes separately.

Winter Break 2026–27: published district examples
The December departure and January ending can both differ. NYC’s named recess begins three days after Houston’s. Jeffco and Baldwin County list later January endings. These examples belong to the named school systems; they are not statewide rules.

Find the first student day back in January
Read the January calendar after the recess entry. A holiday ending and a student return are different pieces of information:
- Hawaii’s standard public-school calendar: the December 21–January 1 recess is followed by a January 4 teacher workday. Students return January 5. See the Hawaii calendar notes.
- Little Rock: January 4–5 are staff days after the named winter vacation. Those days still matter for student care even though they sit outside the recess block. See the Little Rock notes.
- Baldwin County: January 6 is a teacher development/employee workday and a student holiday; the calendar lists January 7 for students to return. The district’s employee and student entries must be read separately.
A calendar that lists December recess through December 31 may put the January 1 holiday in a separate entry. Check that holiday and any following staff days rather than treating December 31 as the final student day off.
Check the last attendance day before December recess
The named break start also may not be the first weekday without students. DCPS lists December 22–January 1 for recess and holidays, with December 21 separately marked as a staff development day with no students. A list of recess dates alone would miss that extra day.
Find the final required attendance day for your child’s grade and check whether it has an early dismissal, assessment or program-specific schedule. Use the actual dismissal time when arranging pickup, care or departure.
Build a winter care and travel calendar
- Record the two attendance boundaries. Write down the last student dismissal before recess and the first student class after it, not just the holiday range.
- Mark the days that need care. Put those school dates beside your work schedule and each childcare program’s opening days. Include January staff days even if holiday care ends after New Year’s.
- Compare the whole household. Siblings in separate districts or programs may leave on different December days or return on different January days.
- Recheck the source before departure. Follow district alerts and any published make-up provisions. Keep school, staff and activity schedules separate when confirming attendance.
Christmas break and February mid-winter breaks
Families may call the December recess “Christmas break,” but the school calendar’s label and dates determine the actual closure. Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026, and New Year’s Day is Friday, January 1, 2027. Those holiday dates do not establish a common return date for every school.

When is Winter Break 2026–27?
The district examples here span late December into early January. NYC lists December 24–January 1; Houston lists December 21–January 1; Jeffco lists December 21–January 5; Baldwin County lists December 21–January 6. Check adjacent staff days and the first student class separately.
Do students go back to school on January 4, 2027?
That is not a nationwide return date. Hawaii’s standard calendar has a January 4 teacher workday and a January 5 student return. Little Rock lists January 4–5 as staff days after its named recess.
Is winter break always two weeks long?
No. NYC’s published December 24–January 1 block is shorter than Houston’s December 21–January 1 block. Staff days, adjacent weekends and later January closures can change the total time a student is away.
Is February mid-winter break included here?
